You’re Not Too Busy, You’re Just Not Organizing Your Tasks Properly

Heidi, thank you for these excellent tips. Now if I can get “unbusy” to implement them, lol. You are so correct about being busy doing absolutely nothing or at least nothing that is productive. There are so many resources out there that I was not aware of or that I was too busy to figure out how to work them. I hope to do better and with your tips, I at least have a head start. Thanks again.

    • There is a tool or resource that can help you with absolutely everything. It’s pretty amazing! All it takes is stopping to think “Is there a better way to do this?” to radically change how you work. I’ve got another post on this topic from a guest author next week too!

Excellent. Now if I can just work out a system to clean the house, cut down the 3 hour school run, cook the dinner for me, hang out the laundry and stop the children throwing food I shall actually be able to get on with some photography!

    • Damn girl a 3 hour school run?! How is that even possible? Denise of http://www.luckybitch.com said the best thing she did at first was getting someone to take on those household cleaning tasks and you can do that pretty cheaply.

      • Fiona Campbell says:

Thanks for the suggestion! School run is 1.5 hours each end of the day – by the time you factor in hanging about waiting for them at the school gates. So exhausting! although I do share it on some days thank goodness! Annoyingly with cleaners by the time you pay their taxes it adds up to a lot more than my other half is willing to spend. But I’m sure I could cut down the amount of time I spend on social media…

        • Do your kids go to a private school that’s really far away? I can’t imagine that trip! I always lived within a 2 minute drive to my schools.

I didn’t mean hiring someone as an employee to help you clean, I meant find someone who is self-employed that can just invoice you.

          • Fiona Campbell says:

technically i think you’re supposed to do paye for your cleaner. Which no one does and that’s fair enough – lots of cleaners are happy to stay under the radar. It’s just that I live with a lawyer and they have to be whiter than white… But anyway… I’m just grumpy because I’ve got so much to do and it really isn’t just busyness and I’ve just had two pampered school boys throwing food in my kitchen! Classic line from our little guest, (upon my threatening my son with washing the floor if he threw one more piece of sweetcorn): ‘Isn’t it a criminal offence to make your child clean the floor?’

          • Sounds like you need some household help! Oh man when I have kids I am so laying the smackdown on their sassy little asses. My mom always managed to punish us in creative ways like hiding the modem or if I was playing music really loud and refusing to turn it down, shutting off the electricity to my room. I admire her creativity lol.

          • Fiona Campbell says:

shutting off the electricity! That is quite cool. The trouble with disciplining children is that it takes so much energy, which is precisely what working mothers are lacking in. Inspired by your post I decided (at 5am this morning!) that what is needed is a cleaner who will fetch my son from school once a week. You can’t get people to pick up without paying them for 3 hours work, so I may as well get a cleaner and use the 3 hours productively! Also my other half is much more open to the concept of childcare than the concept of a cleaner.

          • There you go! If you could get that 3 hours for yourself a few days per week, or even just one day, that could make a big difference!

        • Car rides are great for listening to podcasts or recordings of webinars. I never go anywhere without one ready to go so I can make the most of that idle time.

Systems in my work life are something I definitely need to get on top of. Thanks for the prompt and great ideas!

    Heidi,
Thank you again for these resources. I am all about systems, and I am learning as slowly but understanding the importance of working smarter and not harder. I will have to check out unroll.me. If it can help me manage my emails, I am so using it.

    • There are other tools that will help it unroll.me isn’t available for your email service. Even something as simple as putting non-urgent emails you want to come back to in a “Read Later” folder that you go through every Tuesday at 2pm or something like that will help.

Unroll me is brilliant and has changed my life! Great post with some fab tips.

This POST was right on time, I was just discussing this yesterday, with another wedding planner! Well, written and full of great information. I really needed this because I want to be more organized with my tasks/time in terms of my business. Thank you for listing the resourses as well.
