Some people call me an OG of wedding business marketing, but deep down I'm just another person wearing PJ bottoms on Zoom. I swear a lot, I share my struggles, and I don't pretend to be better than anyone else.
Do you ever feel like success in the wedding industry comes at the cost of your sanity? Like the only way to make it is by working longer and harder than everyone else?
If you’ve bought into this myth, you’re not alone. But I’ve got good news: It’s not true. You can escape the hustle trap, reclaim your time, and build a business that works for you—not the other way around.
In today’s episode, we’re busting the myth that hustle equals success and diving into real-life strategies to help you free up your time, reduce overwhelm, and actually book more weddings.
If you’re ready to stop spinning your wheels and start building a business and a life that works for you, this episode is for you.
I’m Heidi Thompson, and I’m here to help you build a wedding business that not only books more of the clients you love but also gives you the time and freedom to enjoy your life outside of work.
Today, we’re busting the myth that hustle equals success and talking about how to make intentional changes that free up your time, reduce overwhelm, and actually help you book more weddings.
For years, the wedding industry—and let’s face it, society—has pushed this idea that if you’re not hustling 24/7, you’re not doing enough. That success only comes to those who grind the hardest. But here’s the thing: Hustle isn’t the path to a thriving business. It’s the path to burnout.
Think about it: How many wedding pros do you know who are working 60, 70 hours a week and still feel like they’re barely keeping their heads above water? If hustling and working harder were the secret to success, they’d be super successful, but they’re not. They’re feeling stressed out, exhausted, and guilty because they can’t take time off to be with the people they love most.
And it’s not their fault. This is just the default mode wedding pros fall into when they don’t intentionally shape their business to fit their life.
So hustling harder clearly isn’t the answer. Over the past 13 years of working with wedding pros to help them grow their wedding businesses sustainably without burning out, I’ve learned that the answer is working smarter, not longer. I’ve helped thousands of wedding pros create businesses that allow them to book clients they love, make the money they want to make, and still have a life outside of work so I can promise you that this is actually possible. It’s not a pipe dream.
But I want to talk about hustling for a minute. When you hustle and grind and work 60+ hour weeks, there are costs that come along with that.
First, the emotional and physical toll:
I can’t tell you how many wedding pros I’ve met who feel burned out and exhausted. They feel like their life is all work and no play. Their business has become their master and it’s doing the OPPOSITE of what it was supposed to do. Along with all the stress and overwhelm come a whole host of physical symptoms from migraines to cardiac problems.
It’s a heavy price to pay. And honestly, it’s not necessary.
Then there’s the financial impact:
Here’s where it gets real: All that time spent hustling is often spent on things that don’t move the needle. Answering non-urgent emails, chasing ghosted leads, or saying yes to tasks that don’t align with your goals. Every minute you spend on these things is a minute you’re not spending on strategies that actually book weddings.
It’s also time you’re not spending on the whole “having freedom” part of starting your own business. Remember that?
Inside my membership, The Wedding Business Collective, one of the first things members do is free up time to work on their businesses. Without fail, members free up 5-7 hours per week on average. That’s between 11-15 days per year! Imagine getting 2 weeks back!
What would you do with that time? I know I’d probably travel and spend some time relaxing by a pool.
All of that time was being spent on things that don’t actually impact the business in any meaningful way. Sure you were working and being busy during that time, but it wasn’t actually getting you anywhere. That’s a very eye-opening realization.
I want to share a couple of examples of wedding pros I’ve worked with who’ve reclaimed their time and built stronger businesses in the process.
Carolyn, a floral designer, came to me feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of marketing she thought she needed to do. She was trying to keep up with Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and blogging—and it was eating up so much of her time without delivering real results.
We worked together to identify what was actually working for her. She discovered that referrals and SEO were her strongest lead sources. So, she made the bold decision to stop posting on Facebook entirely, automated some posts to Instagram, and focused her energy on improving her website and building relationships with planners.
The result? Carolyn now spends about two hours a week on marketing. Not only that, but she booked her biggest wedding ever—a $35,000 floral spend—because her marketing started attracting the exact clients she wanted to work with.
Katherine, an officiant, was frustrated with relying on platforms like The Knot and WeddingWire to bring in clients. She felt stuck in a cycle of paying high advertising fees without consistently attracting her ideal couples.
By dropping what didn’t work and focusing on what did, Katherine worked on creating her own lead-generating machine. She shifted her energy to building strong relationships with venues and planners, refined her website to showcase her unique value, and optimized her SEO to reach her dream clients directly.
Dropping The Knot & Wedding Wire and building her own lead-generating machine saved Katherine a TON of time. She realized she was spending several hours each week chasing leads from those platforms that were never going to book her. It was a huge waste of time and it was soul-crushing.
Now, Katherine has freed herself from the reliance on paid platforms and she books most of her weddings through her own lead-generating machine that doesn’t require much time to maintain. She’s even taught members of The Wedding Business Collective exactly how she did it for her specific business and how they can make it work for them. She’s attracting her ideal couples and has built a sustainable business that works for her.
Katie, a wedding planner, wanted to build her business but didn’t have a lot of time to spare as a full-time engineer.
She realized that she had to focus due to her limited time so she decided to dedicate herself to building strong vendor relationships, making herself the clear go-to planner for her ideal clients on her website, and she only used social media in a way that was already generating results for her. No random posting on 5 different platforms.
In 1 year Katie went from 1 to 15 bookings. She just had her first $10,000 month in her business and she’s getting ready to leave her day job. She is comfortably running her business alongside her day job because she’s just trying to do EVERYTHING. She’s spending her time very strategically.
The key takeaway from these wedding pros?
The changes they made weren’t about working harder. They were about making intentional decisions to focus on what matters most. And you can do the same!
Just imagine waking up with a clear plan for your day, knowing exactly what to focus on to move your business forward. No more scrambling, no more guessing, and no more feeling like you’re just spinning your wheels. And certainly no more 60+ hour weeks.
