Some people call me an OG of wedding business marketing, but deep down I'm just another person wearing PJ bottoms on Zoom. I swear a lot, I share my struggles, and I don't pretend to be better than anyone else.

Are you still advertising on The Knot and WeddingWire mainly because you’re worried about losing visibility for your reviews if you stop paying? You are not alone.
So many wedding pros I talk to share that they feel stuck. They spend hundreds of dollars every month on advertising there, but they often tell me leads feel slow or inconsistent, inquiries sometimes ghost, and they start wondering if it’s still delivering the value they hoped for.
If you’ve ever asked yourself “Is WeddingWire worth it?” or felt pressure to keep paying The Knot just to keep your hard-earned reviews prominent, this episode is for you.

Hey there, and welcome back to the Evolve Your Wedding Business Podcast. I’m Heidi Thompson, and today I want to talk about something wedding pros don’t realize is putting their business at risk.
I know that sounds dramatic, but stick with me. Because if you’re paying to advertise on The Knot or WeddingWire purely to keep your reviews visible, you might now just be wasting money, you’re putting your most powerful social proof in someone else’s hands.
Let me tell you about one of my clients. She had dozens of glowing reviews on The Knot. Rave after rave from real couples she adored working with. But she wasn’t getting leads from the listing anymore. Her ideal clients weren’t coming from there.
And yet she was paying $300 a month. Not because it was making her money. Not because it brought in good leads. But because she was terrified that if she canceled, she’d lose the reviews.
Three hundred dollars a month. Just to keep something that was already hers.
We added it up. That’s $3,600 a year to hold onto social proof that belonged to her. Not leads. Not bookings. Just visibility for reviews she earned through years of amazing service.
She realized something in that moment and I want you to feel it too:
She felt like she wasn’t paying for marketing.
To her, it felt like she was paying a ransom.
This is what happens when you let a directory control your social proof. This is what happens when you stay afraid to stop advertising on The Knot just because of the reviews.
The Real Problem
Here’s the truth: those reviews aren’t fully in your control when they live only on someone else’s platform
You can’t download them. You can’t move them. You can’t back them up. And if a profile is removed or deleted (which I’ve seen happen in some cases), the reviews tied to it might not be accessible.
I’m not saying it will happen but I’ve seen it happen. And even if they don’t remove your profile, why take that risk?
Why let a directory control the visibility of your best proof?
These are YOUR reviews. You worked hard for them. They’re the words of real couples you went above and beyond for. You deserve to control them.
I want you to think about this: is advertising on The Knot or advertising on WeddingWire really worth it just to keep your wedding vendor reviews visible?
What You Should Be Doing Instead
So what can you do? Let’s talk action steps.
1. Copy and Save Every Review You Have
Go through The Knot, WeddingWire, and any other platforms where clients have left you reviews. Copy the full text, screenshot them, and save them in a secure place like Google Drive or Dropbox. Keep a dedicated folder or document of all your testimonials so you’re not dependent on one site to access them.
2. Add Reviews to Your Website
Feature the strongest reviews on your homepage, services page, and inquiry thank-you page. Sprinkle relevant quotes throughout don’t just dump them on a testimonials page that no one visits.
3. Use Reviews in Your Marketing
4. Ask for Reviews Outside of Directories
Send clients directly to your Google Business profile if you want a central place that’s more “ownable.” You can also collect testimonials via my Testimonials That Sell process and ask for permission to use them publicly.
5. Focus on Owning Your Visibility
Your website, email list, and to some degree your social channels are places where you control what gets seen. Lean into them. Don’t rely on third-party platforms that can change the rules, hide your reviews, or delete your profile.
If you’re advertising wedding services, think beyond the wedding ads these directories offer. Real visibility comes from the places you own.
This is About Control
This isn’t just about your reviews. It’s about control.
When someone else controls your visibility, it can leave your business feeling vulnerable. That’s why so many wedding pros tell me they feel stuck, even when they’re spending hundreds each month on these platforms.
But you can take that power back. I’ve helped so many wedding pros cancel their listings and build a system that they control and not only survive, but thrive.
When you have your own plan for how to attract and book the right clients, you don’t need to rely on platforms that might pull the rug out from under you. You’re not panicking about your listings or praying for leads. You’re getting booked from sources you trust.
And you don’t need to keep wondering, “Is WeddingWire worth it?” You’ll already know the answer.
