Some people call me an OG of wedding business marketing, but deep down I'm just another person wearing PJ bottoms on Zoom. I swear a lot, I share my struggles, and I don't pretend to be better than anyone else.

You already know your marketing messaging sounds like everyone else’s. You already know which clients you’d clone in a heartbeat and which ones make your stomach drop when their name pops up in your inbox. You’re not confused about what’s wrong. You’re stalled.
This episode isn’t another rundown of strategy or messaging tips. It’s about the thing that happens after you already know what to do and still don’t do it. Why “I’ll fix my marketing after busy season” never actually turns into fixing your marketing, and why that’s not a discipline problem.
There’s a reason later never comes, and it’s not because you’re lazy or you don’t care. Once you hear it, you won’t be able to unsee it in your own business.

Heidi Thompson:
You already know what to do, but here’s why you haven’t done it.
Hey there, my friend. Welcome back to the podcast. Quick one before we start. If you have been listening to the last two episodes and nodding along, this one is definitely for you specifically. So stick around. Here’s what I want to talk about today. It’s not strategy. it’s not messaging, the thing that happens after you know exactly what to do and you still don’t do it. I want to be clear about something because I think a lot of advice gets this wrong. Most established wedding professionals listening to this aren’t confused about what’s broken. We’ve already talked about that. You already know your messaging sounds like everyone else’s.
And so you’re blending in. You’re having to compete on price. You already know you’ve got clients that you would clone in a heartbeat and clients who make your stomach drop when their name pops up in your inbox.
You already know the fix has something to do with talking to your best clients instead of guessing. You’re not missing information here. You’re stalled. And being stalled is a different problem than being confused.
Confused needs information. It needs an answer. Stalled needs someone to ask you the uncomfortable question.
So let’s ask it. Here’s the line I hear more than almost anything else in my business.
I’ll fix my marketing after busy season. I get why you say it. Busy season feels like a perfectly reasonable excuse. You’re busy. You’re underwater. You don have the bandwidth to sit down and rewrite your website on top of everything else you got going on Except here what actually happens Busy season ends and instead of marketing you got a backlog of editing images to go through that you going to use final walkthroughs invoicing or just plain exhaustion that you need weeks to recover from before you can even think straight and then before you know it, it’s the holidays. Then it’s January and you’re telling yourself yet again, this is finally the year. Bookings start trickling in again and you think, well, I need to deal with these now. I’ll revisit my marketing later. And later never comes. Not because you’re lazy, but because later was never a real time on your calendar. It was just the absence of now, some distant time in the future. I have watched this happen to so many talented wedding professionals for over a decade. The marketing that needed to change in January is identical in November.
And it’s not because they didn’t care. It’s because nothing ever forced the moment to actually happen. Here’s the part that actually makes it worse. And I think it’s the real reason later never comes. It’s not that you’re sitting still. You’re not. You’re posting. You’re working with clients. You’re replying to so many emails. You’re trying a new caption format you saw someone use. You’re doing things. You’re in motion. But it feels like not enough is changing.
Because none of those things were ever the thing that makes the change, that moves the needle.
And this is the trap. Busy work feels like progress because it’s work. It takes up time. It checks the box. You close your laptop and think, okay, I did something for my marketing today.
But if you can’t point to what specifically that activity fixed, you were probably just managing the feeling of being behind and not actually getting ahead. And here’s the part that nobody tells you. A lot of wedding pros don’t avoid the real work because they’re scared of it.
This is not an aversion thing. They avoid it because they genuinely don’t know which of the million things on their list is the one thing that matters most right now. So they inevitably default to the thing that easiest to start right in front of them or most urgent and currently on fire A new caption a new mood board a new welcome guide If you don know which lever actually moves your bookings every single task on that list looks equally urgent and equally optional. That’s not a discipline problem, it’s a clarity problem wearing a procrastination costume. And almost every single wedding pro I work with has it.
I’ve mentioned Katie Stoddard on the podcast before. She’s been a guest twice, but I want to tell you the part I usually skip. She is a wedding planner. Before she did the work of making sure her messaging showed her clients that she was a perfect fit to them, she had zero bookings. She wasn’t slow. She had zero. She wasn’t confused about what was wrong because of that position. She knew her marketing wasn’t landing. She just kept doing the things that felt productive, that she knew how to do instead of the one thing that actually mattered because the productive feeling things were easier to start and finish in an afternoon and feel accomplished by. When she finally sat down and did that real work and figured out who her best fit clients actually were and rebuilt her messaging around what they said, so it attracted them like a magnet, the woman booked 29 weddings in a year. And she already has 28 on the books for next. She went from zero to 29 by making one change.
That’s not a small improvement. That’s what happens when the thing that was sitting on the list finally gets done instead of being put off again. Now here’s something I want you to sit with because it might sting a little, if you were going to do this yourself, the research, the client interviews, the pattern finding, the actual rewrite, you probably would have done it by now. You’ve had the time to think about it. You’ve had access to every framework, book, podcast episode that tells you exactly what to do. That’s not a character flaw. It’s just what happens when something competes against client work and invoicing and, you know, having an actual life.
The important but not urgent thing loses. It loses every single time to absolutely everything else. And this isn’t me telling you this so that you feel bad about it. I’m telling you because the fix for I keep not doing this isn’t more willpower It removing the thing that requires willpower in the first place The loop doesn’t break because you finally find a slow week Because we all know those don exist And when they do, a million other things come up. It breaks because something makes later impossible. And that is the whole reason that Perfect Fit Clients exists. Not because you don’t understand the process because understanding it and having it done are two completely different things and only one of them is actually going to change your bookings. Here’s how it works.
You forward one email that I write for you to your best clients. I do the research. I find the patterns in what your best clients actually said. I write your positioning, your messaging, your homepage opener, all of it. You, you just show up to a 30-minute call. That is the whole ask. No, I’ll get to it after busy season. There’s nothing left for you to get to. It is done for you. Applications for the spots at the founding price close this Friday, July 17th. After that, the price doubles. It goes from $9.97 to $19.97, and that’s U.S. dollars. I’m not telling you that to pressure you. I’m telling you because right now is the version of later that actually has a deadline attached to it. Every other later that you’ve told yourself this year didn’t have one, and look at how that went. And before you tell yourself you don’t have the bandwidth right now, I get it and that’s why you don’t have to start right now. Once you’re in you have six months to actually begin. Peak season isn’t a reason to wait on this one. The price is the only thing on the clock. So if you’ve been nodding through this whole episode you know what category you’re in.
